The exile, the one who is banished from his hometown, Ovid (Rome), Dante (Florence), Gibran (Lebanon) … We imagine him begging in another city, confiding in his notebooks his lament. An unfinished manuscript, found in the bushes of downtown Montreal. The author dreamed, imagined this poetic tale by making the voice of the narrator interact with the found writings of the beggar.

I grew up in a Muslim country where religion and culture have blended together for centuries. Tolerance was then a wise mediator between culture, religion and individual freedoms. However, the more I grew, the more I felt a change that disturbed this established order. Everything had started in school. The religious took more and more place in the schools and dictated their programs. The men of God have also monopolized mosques to dictate to people how to live and how to think.

As a writer and director from Rouyn-Noranda, in this very personal documentary I seek to understand the spirit of the place that gave birth to Richard Desjardins’ poetry. The creation of a mural in his honour in the summer of 2018 becomes a pretext to meet the Rouyn poet and return to the sources of his creation. He went back over his films, telling us, among other things, how difficult it was for him to deal with the backlash from the release of L’Erreur Boréale. Twenty years after this hard-hitting film, he shares his thoughts on major environmental issues.
