Summer 2001 in Montreal, in the midst of a housing crisis, homeless people, the under-housed, and young activists occupy a vacant building. In the name of the right to housing, a political squat takes shape with the support of the city. Squat! exposes the hypocrisy and illogicality of the municipal authorities who stole the squatters’ initiative and idealism, drawing them into a political game of which they were the victims. The film not only reveals the voracious eye and biased coverage of the media, but also denounces the strong tendency of our capitalist society to not consider housing as a fundamental right and to repress any action to regain it autonomously.

An intimate portrait of Anne J. Gibson, a marginalized woman in her sixties living in Toronto, Canada who makes a living by walking dogs. Her discovery of street photography has allowed her to overcome a legacy of addiction and trauma and see the world through a new lens. As Anne says, “first and foremost, taking pictures is an act of mental health.” The other character in the film is Kensington Market, a bohemian neighbourhood in Toronto. Through her photos, Anne wants to preserve the market’s anarchy before gentrification takes over, and to give thanks to the people who have helped bring her back into the world.

Ces derniers offriront le cadeau demandé par l’enfant dans sa lettre au père Noël. Bien souvent, ce cadeau sera le seul que l’enfant recevra.
