Cabines
Johanne Fournier
They are called Bel Azur or Riviera, Étoile d’Or or Goëmons-sur-Mer. On route 132, east of Quebec. Towards the Gaspé Peninsula. A row of small cabins, almost all built the same, facing the sea or facing the road, it depends. Some, pretty, with wooden chairs, galleries of all colors, planters and kitchenettes. Others, barricaded, abandoned. Others, in between, the owners not really knowing if it’s worth renovating them but still opening, one more season, from one year to the next. How many stars do they have? Billions. In the sky. Born around 1930 on the side of the roads of America, at the same time as the automobile and paid holidays, most of these tiny dwellings were replaced by motels or highways. Some resist the passage of time and the spirit of the times. Along the St. Lawrence River, between Berthier-sur-Mer and Miguasha, over nearly a thousand kilometers of coastline, they have seen the wharves disappear in the villages and are now witnessing the multiplication of wind farms. In perfect intimacy with the landscape. Rooted, they keep their owners hostage…

Le pays interdit
Danièle Lacourse
In the midst of the 1984-85 famine, the Ethiopian government was spending a million dollars a day to wage war in its northern province of Eritrea. Yet, according to the UN, two days of military spending would have been enough to stop the desertification of Ethiopia. Shot from 1985 to 1989, this film traces the roots of the conflict and its terrible consequences for civilian populations. A Muslim poet and an Eritrean doctor talk about their fight for peace and to overcome age-old mentalities that hinder the realization of their rights and freedoms. Beyond the conflict, Mamazeinab and Assefaw Tekeste give us a glimpse of a different society, with innovative projects in health, education, women’s rights and environmental protection: fragile signs but which make possible hope.

Spoon
Michka Saäl
Dialogue between a black American poet locked up for life and me. In a tone of confidence, Spoon evokes his 19 years of somnambulistic life until his conviction, then his discovery of poetry and writing. The initiatory story of his descent into hell is inscribed in the hollow of the images of his country, the Mojave desert, and of my interior landscapes, when emotion summons them there. Because Spoon explains, that if he did not write, He would be a shadow boxing with death.

La ville d’un rêve
Annabel Loyola
Montreal was born from a dream, carried by those who believed in the possibility of creating a better world in New France. Who were these people? What ideal were they pursuing and why? The answers can be found in a 17th century manuscript, which undoubtedly contains the hidden memoirs of Jeanne Mance. With a unique and personal angle, the filmmaker revisits this story where the past resonates with an ever-present desire to create a world closer to humanistic values.
