Marquise Lepage

A filmmaker before the word even existed, Guy-Blaché made her first film at the end of the last century, when cinema was still brand-new. After directing, producing and writing more than 700 films, she slipped into oblivion. This film rescues her brave and shining memory.

The Second World War has just ended. There are still prisoners of war captured by the Allies in Canada. In the Eastern Townships, Agathe and Bertin Chevalier, who need help on the farm, call on the services of a German prisoner from the nearby military base. This is how Hanibal Walburg enters their lives. Initially wary, the Chevalier family is seduced by the newcomer. He becomes particularly close to Agathe, who has been somewhat neglected since her husband entered politics. A troubled relationship develops between Agathe and Hanibal, who soon returns to Europe. Over time, the young German transforms into a true legend in the eyes of the family. Agathe continues to write to him and even visits him ten years after his departure. Then silence falls until, nearly half a century after the war, Hanibal returns to Canada. The reunion ends in a confrontation that seriously shakes the myth.
