A professional downhill bicycle racer, Laurie, loses her place on her team when she is overcome by a mysterious competitive weariness. She recycles herself as a courier in Montreal. In the course of the routine mechanical failures associated with her work, Laurie meets and eventually wins over Lorenzo, the owner of a bike shop, an Italian ex-racer. His recollection of the good old days of continental road racing, complete with flashbacks to his 60s era peloton, will reawakens Laurie’s racing spirit.
Heart: The Marilyn Bell Story

This made-for-TV bio-pic is about Marilyn Bell, a Canadian teenager who, in 1954, was the first person to swim across Lake Ontario. She won the Toronto Canadian National Exhibition prize after Florence Chadwick, a then-famous American swimmer who was widely expected to win, dropped out in the middle of the race. Half of this heart-warming movie is devoted to the 21 hour swim in which the 16-year old Bell is exhorted by her pushy coach Gus Ryder not to give up.

Alice, a seismologist working in Tokyo, is sent to a small town on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River to observe a peculiar phenomenon: the tides have stopped rising and falling. To Japanese experts, this signals that a major, global earthquake is on the way. They also take it as a sign of fate that the town happens to be Alice’s birthplace. Alice does everything she can to maintain an emotional distance from the town, where she spent an unhappy childhood. She does her research, conducts seismic probes, and begins to worry: for some strange reason, there’s no listing in the local telephone book for Marc Vandal, an attractive pilot. The only way to probe the unfathomable is to throw oneself heart and soul into the task, at the risk of losing oneself… If you can’t raise someone from the dead, can you at least help someone rekindle their desire for life?

Émilie travaille comme préposée de vestiaire au bar très sélect LE LIVERPOOL. Un soir, une cliente est transportée d’urgence à l’hôpital et ne revient pas chercher son manteau. Inquiète, Émilie décide de le lui rapporter et se retrouve soudain malgré elle plongée dans un complot criminel dont elle ne soupçonne pas les ramifications. Thomas, un client du bar secrètement amoureux d’elle, décide de plaquer temporairement son job de publicitaire pour l’aider, au risque de sa propre vie. Thomas est un peu timide, il manque de confiance en lui et n’est pas très musclé, mais il a des idées. Après tout, il rêvait d’être journaliste et de dénoncer les injustices. Voici qu’aujourd’hui, il peut faire d’une pierre deux coups. Sauver la planète et émouvoir une fille. Ou vice versa.

Le Récit d’A is several stories that evolve in the same video, parallel universes that echo each other without ever crossing paths. Andrew’s story, the travel diary, the thought of Edmond Jabès are all elements of the game… I use autobiographical traces (the “scanner”, the Super 8) to talk about a more vast; the existential trace of the Jabès desert and the desert of the 90s; our youth devastated by AIDS, my life deserted of its youth. The video also speaks of the gaze, of this consciousness which changes and of what can open up, even in the face of such an apparently fatal outcome. – Esther Valiquette

Extenderis is an experimental tape constructed like a contemporary psalm. It reflects on the origins of life and the archiving capacities of DNA. The tape revolves around the thesis of Richard Dawkins’ book The Blind Watchmaker (1987), which proposes that humans, like all living beings, are temporary receptacles of an eternal code: DNA. . We serve DNA, not the other way around. This idea obviously shocked the anthropocentric model and was considered heresy in the scientific community. In this sense, Extenderis is a heretical psalm.
