Literally becoming one with his canvas, the painter André Desjardins embarks on the creation of a large format painting. It all starts with a powder of pigment projected randomly on the canvas. Then, drawing inspiration from the shapes and textures thus created, the artist gives birth to a human face that seems to want to emerge from the painting.

This intimate documentary follows sculptor André Desjardins’ creation of a monumental sculpture. The artist opens the doors of his studio, nestled deep in the forest. Alone, surrounded by silence, he sands, polishes, cuts, and reworks the materials of his craft. The sounds of nature merge with the humming of his tools. Slowly, we observe the birth of Free, an eight-foot-tall kneeling figure. The lengthy creative process is punctuated by moments when the artist shares his thoughts. He revisits memories of childhood loss and grief, solitude, and an insatiable need to create.

This journey, as surprising as it is refreshing, culminates in the studio where, patiently, the artist assembles all these objects, thus giving birth to playful and endearing characters.

When the double subjectivity strikes: that causes a tension between matter and form, sensitivity and intellect. It is the terrible threat of the formlessness that hovers. A visual artist’s view of life.
