BIOGRAPHY

Vanya studied theatre and visual arts from a a very early age. She began formal theatre training at 15 with Polina Klimovitskaya and on went on to train in performance at NYU & Tisch School of the Arts. She soon changed her attention to directing, completing her degree at McGill University in English/Theatre with first class honours. After spending a number of years living throughout Europe, attending the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and creating several theatre productions, she returned to Montreal in order to complete a master’s degree in Theatre Directing with an Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC) award for excellence.

She soon dove into filmmaking creating Montreal Stories, three short poetic films that take place throughout the 20th century; she produced the final one, set in 1944, with her newly established production company time’s thievish progress to eternity FILMS. While attending the Canadian Film Centre’s Directors’ Lab, she completed Impossible starring Tyler Hynes and Charlotte Le Bon. She wrote, directed and produced the short film, At the Bottom of the Hill and, more recently, her first feature film, Woman In Car., both which star Hélène Joy. Woman In Car. is nominated this year for Achievement in Music – Best Original Song at the Canadian Screen Awards. Vanya is presently developing her new feature length script The Crooked Timber.
