Born in Syria into a cosmopolitan family, Marya Zarif is an author, illustrator, screenwriter and director, with a predilection for animated cinema. A versatile and multidisciplinary creator, she loves telling stories for children and adults, in her own unique way.
In 2020, she created, scripted and co-directed her first youth animated web series, Dounia (season 1 and season 2), broadcasted on Le Squat on Télé-Québec. The success of this web series allowed her to develop a feature film Dounia and the Princess of Aleppo.
This first film, presented for the first time to the public at the Annecy International Animation Festival (France), won several international awards such as best film at the International Festival of Young Cinephiles LUCAS (Germany) and the Grand Prix Winner Japan Prize (Japan). It was released in cinemas in France and Belgium in February 2023, and in Quebec in April 2023.
