BIOGRAPHY

Francine Allaire studied communications at Concordia University in Montreal from 1973 to 1976. As part of her film course, she directed Une bien belle ville, a collective film on housing and demolition problems in Montreal’s working-class neighbourhoods. During her studies, she worked as a researcher-host for socio-cultural programs on the CKVL-FM radio station. In 1976, she and Sylvie Groulx began researching and directing their film Le grand remue-ménage. She then worked with women’s groups and citizens’ committees using film and video as animation tools. She also worked with other film workers on a study of artisanal cinema in Quebec.
