BIOGRAPHY
Joyce Rock first gained recognition by co-directing, with Sophie Bissonnette and Martin Duckworth, the politically engaged documentary A Wives’ Tale. This documentary won the 1980 Critics’ Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary from the Quebec Film Critics Association. It was also nominated for a Canadian Genie Award for Best Canadian Documentary.
Joyce Rock returned to Montreal in 2011 after working for 13 years in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES), where she co-founded and directed the DTES Neighbourhood House from 2005 to 2011. She has placed the right to food at the heart of her work, using this fundamental human right as a lever for community development. In 2011, she received the 3M Health Leadership Award for her contributions to advancing the social determinants of health. She was also honored in 2013 as part of the Remarkable Women honoring the contribution of women to local food communities in Vancouver.
“I became disillusioned with filmmaking when I worked with an Indigenous community that was literally invaded by every type of filming imaginable. With rare exceptions, people prioritized their recordings over those they were filming. Since then, I have instead used the tools of community development to pursue my passions: sex workers’ rights, in particular, prisoners’ rights, and raising public awareness of the need for supervised injection sites. I believe in it and I use it because, in my view, community development is the natural home for all those who have never belonged or who have been deprived of theirs.”
