BIOGRAPHY
An active member of the Makila co-op since 2009 and co-founder of the Cuban Hat pitch, Giulia Frati has directed social documentaries and experimental shorts. Her feature film Istanbul Echoes plunges us into the reality of street vendors in a gentrifying megalopolis. The film’s carefully crafted sound design turns urban sounds into music and was awarded the Iris Prize for Best Documentary Sound in 2020. In Pupa’s Garden (2005), the Italian-born filmmaker offers an inspiring portrait of her grandmother, who transformed an illegal dump into a beautiful botanical garden for her community on Lake Como, Italy. It has been screened at several international festivals, won a jury prize and was broadcast on French television. Currently, Giulia is filming symphonic recordings of various Quebec orchestras, and is developing her first fiction projects.
