BIOGRAPHY
After graduating from INIS in 2013, Ariane Louis-Seize entered the world of professional cinema through the front door. Her directorial debut Wild Skin (2016), a 29-minute short about the wacky world of a snake-woman, won the Cours écrire ton court grand prize for its screenplay. The film had its world premiere at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) and went on to travel to over fifty festivals around the world, winning numerous awards and nominations along the way. “I’ve always loved supernatural worlds, with characters who are on the bangs.” A new filmmaker with a universe as original as it was fascinating was born.
Two short films followed, Être elles (2016) and Rituels (2018), tackling women and sexuality from two different angles. She explores this subject further with Les petites vagues (2018). a short film about a young girl’s bioluminescent sexual awakening. The film launched at TIFF is in competition there and at Berlinale 2019. Also at TIFF, The Depths (2019) has its world premiere; the film deals with grief and the mother-daughter bond. Shooting Star (2020), also launched at TIFF, follows in the successful footsteps of Ariane Louis-Seize’s previous short films, winning a dozen awards around the world.
In 2023, his first feature film, a darkly humorous vampire comedy-drama, Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, was released. The media are positive and curious, as are the film community and the public. The film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival 2023 is very well received: it wins the Venice Days Best Director award. On the sidelines of the festival, Ariane Louis-Seize was shortlisted for the Fan Heart Award, alongside Wes Anderson, Bertrand Bonello, Yorgos Lanthimos and Sofia Coppola, among others. Theatrical release in Quebec is scheduled for fall 2023.
